The beauty of language is that it grows everywhere! Think of a wild forest flower, blooming naturally across places and moments throughout the day. Every routine, interaction, and shared activity offers an opportunity to build meaningful communication. When children are given frequent, intentional chances to engage in conversation, they develop stronger and more flexible language skills that support long-term learning. 

One of the most important principles in language development, and in learning any new skill, is understanding that success cannot be expected without sufficient exposure and modeling. Children must first see and hear how language works before they are able to use it independently. By consistently showing our children the “how-to’s” of language in small, manageable ways, we lay the foundation for confidence, understanding, and lasting retention. 

Below are simple yet highly effective recommended strategies families can use at home to support language growth: 

• Follow your child’s lead: Join in activities your child enjoys and talk about what they are doing or playing with. 
• Model language: Show your child what words sound like instead of asking lots of questions. 
• Add a little more: Build on what your child says by adding one or two words. 
• Talk through routines: Describe everyday activities like meals, bath time, and getting dressed. 
• Keep language simple: Use short phrases that match your child’s level and gradually build from there. 
• Pause and wait: Give your child extra time to listen, process, and respond. 
• Use gestures and visuals: Point, show objects, and use gestures to support understanding. 
• Praise all attempts: Respond positively to sounds, words, gestures, or signs to encourage communication.
