Transitioning from my role as a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) into the position of Team Chair in public schools was one of the most rewarding professional shifts of my career. This change didn’t just open a new chapter; it unlocked powerful lines of communication and collaboration that continue to make a real difference in students’ lives.

One particular success story stands out - a reminder of why we do what we do.

A seventh-grade student was deeply struggling with behaviors in class. On paper, his performance suggested failure. He was failing most of his classes, and it was easy for others to write him off. But we knew better. Beneath the surface, this student was incredibly bright, inquisitive, and capable. He wasn’t failing because he didn’t understand the material - he was failing because the environment wasn’t working for him.

Rather than look at the numbers alone, we - teachers, specialists, administrators, and most importantly, his parents - came together to understand who he truly was. Through ongoing, consistent, and collaborative conversations, we built a plan around his strengths and needs. We focused on connection first: making sure he felt seen, heard, and safe.

The change was profound. With the right support in place, not only did his academic performance improve, but so did his emotional well-being. Most importantly, he was happy. Genuinely happy. And when a student feels good internally - when they feel safe and supported - then learning can happen. Not just academically, but emotionally, socially, and personally.

As educators, it's not enough to focus on curriculum and test scores. Our real job is to uncover the whole child: to find out who they are, who supports them, and what they truly need to thrive. Growth cannot happen in a vacuum. It happens through relationships, trust, and a willingness to see beyond the surface.

This story isn’t just about one student. It’s about what’s possible when we shift our lens, work together, and lead with compassion. As a team chair, I have had the privilege of helping to guide those conversations every day. And for that, I’m incredibly grateful.
